Genoa

The brand new Genoa-Kingston High School
Genoa is an award winning
community in the heart of Illinois' historic
and beautiful Kishwaukee River Valley. Since
1996 they have been an Illinois Main Street
designated community. Illinois Main Street
began in 1993, as a preservation based,
economic development program sponsored by
the Illinois Department of Commerce and
Community Affairs. More than $3 million has
been reinvested in the downtown
infrastructure since 1996 in building and
facade renovations, parking lot construction
and sidewalk improvements. Since its state
recognition in 1996, Genoa Main Street has
been a consistent award winner at Illinois
Main Street conferences.

Genoa Main Street - Pioneer Weekend.
Pioneer Weekend celebrates Genoa's rich
history along the Chicago to Galena
stagecoach trail. Genoa Main Street has
participated in this event since its'
inception in 1996. Stagecoach rides are
offered, along with hands on exhibits of how
pioneers lived, worked, and played. Country
music fills the air, and the day ends with
free popcorn and Movies on Main Street at
dusk. The weekend unifies Genoa Main Street
with several organizations including the
Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society, Genoa
Lion's Club, Genoa Women's Club, and Genoa
Public Library and promotes the community's
heritage and understanding of Genoa's place
in history.
Demographics:
The population was 4,169 at the 2000 census;
1,555 households, and 1,119 families
residing in the city. Out of the 1,555
households, 41.0% had children under the age
of 18 living with them, 57.6% were married
couples living together, 10.5% had a female
householder with no husband present, and
28.0% were non-families. 24.3% of all
households were made up of individuals and
9.7% had someone living alone who was 65
years of age or older. The average household
size was 2.68 and the average family size
was 3.21.
